How Well Do I Know Amasya?
Each question has four coloured answers and a countdown. The quicker you answer, the more points you score; correct answers in a row earn a streak bonus. The questions are about photographs, inscriptions, dates and the people who commissioned the buildings.
In class, in teams
Project the question onto the board. Teams show their answer with a coloured card (▲ ◆ ● ■). When the time runs out, or when you press Show the answer, the correct answer appears; mark the teams that got it right. Each correct answer is worth 1000 points.
The guest of the celebration
The Dragon of Amasya: the giant beaten by wits
According to an Amasya legend, a dragon once settled on the Tersakan stream. For months it drank the water and ate the crops; no water reached the gardens, the harvest withered and Amasya suffered a long famine. Answer every question correctly and the dragon in the stone will come to life for you.
- Where? In the Tersakan area, at the place called Göllübağları.
- How were they saved? The city's notables loaded ten camel caravans with sacks of salt and drove them before the dragon. Eating the salt, the dragon drank and drank as it grew thirsty, until at last it burst.
- Who told it?Varol Bulut (b. 1990), a teacher of illumination art, who heard it from local people.
This is a folk tale, not a document. The legend does not say what the dragon looked like; the dragon here is an illustration made with AI (Google Gemini), inspired by stone reliefs. In the celebration the dragon does not burst: it comes to life and rises into the sky. Source: Tuğrul Balaban, Amasya Efsane, Menkabe ve Memoratları (Amasya: Amasya Valiliği, 2014), 555.
The questions come from two places. Some were written by the project team; the answer to each was checked against a source, and the source appears on screen after you answer. The others are built from the site's sourced data: the photographs are the archive photographs on the stop pages (with their credits below the photograph), the dates and the people who commissioned the buildings come from the book Kültürel Miras Boyutuyla Amasya, and the inscriptions from the stop pages; the wrong answers are real details of other buildings. Dates on which the sources disagree, and questions where the commissioner's name is part of the building's name, were left out. Legends are not asked as facts: folk-tale questions carry a “Folk tale” label and say openly that they are tales. After every answer you see the correct one and the related page.
How is the score calculated?
- A correct answer is worth between 500 and 1000 points: answer straight away and you get close to 1000; answer in the last second and you get close to 500.
- Correct answers in a row earn a streak bonus: +100 for the second, +200 for the third, up to +500.
- You can also play with the keyboard: the 1, 2, 3 and 4 keys choose the answers.
- In class mode every team that answers correctly gets 1000 points; speed does not count, because all the teams show their cards at the same moment.
